I've only got about a thousand miles on my bike, but I don't think the cooling fan has EVER come on.

There are no signs of overheating, so maybe it just has never gotten hot enough.

Anyone ever notice the fan running and, if so, what were the conditions?

I have my tbird in tucson. a rather hot area. the cooling fan comes on after a hard run, when stopped at a light, or when pulling in to fuel or to the garage.

fan very seldom runs while motoring. course I dont ride much over a hundred degrees...

it makes a whirring, sewing machine sound, and is right up there with picking bugs out of your teeth as a positive thing. the good side is the motor is keeping cool! even if you are not!

After your next run out leave it running while stood still (the bike not you) on stand, after a couple of mins or so if no cool wind the fan should come on.

I have only ever heard mine a couple of times and that was on a warm day after stood running.

My first natural instinct is to breathe. My second is to evade tax's.

I heard this "sewing machine" noise only 1 time... And I was afraid about the origin of this noise.
I will check the fan, the next time I heard it...

Yes, and based on the posts so far, I'm wondering if mine comes on too often!

Conditions are pretty universally the same:

1) Ambient temp is around the 25 celcius mark or greater.
2) I have ridden the bike in traffic for at least 30 minutes.
3) I stand still at a traffic light for longer than a minute. (Which happens to be the same light, every day, right before I get home.)

How does it sound/feel?

You really can't miss it. Descriptions are correct in sound - sewing machine high pitched wirring. But with a helmet on you *might* miss it. What you wont miss is the blast of hot air blown up at you legs. Amazing how much heat gets blown out and the speed the fan throws it out there.

I just wish it would come on in winter. :) In summer, if you are hot, you will feel worse. :( But it will keep the motor cool, and that's why we get the extra HP out of our engines that other 1600cc air cooled engines can't do for fear of overheating.

mine comes on if the weather is warm and I sit at a traffic light for longer than say 2-3 minutes. It also comes on when I pull into my drive... but there is a lovely s curve running up a hill right before my home and I can't help but give it the beans every time I hit that streak. Usually by the time I pull into the drive the fan kicks on just as I pull into the drive.

All the 'I never hear the fan' folks seem to be in rather cool climates. Makes sense to me

Mine comes on fairly often in warm weather or if i'm in a lot of traffic where i am stopped quite a bit. But i do live in a warm climate and i would also assume all our bikes, regardless of whether we have the same mods or stock , are going to be slightly different in how lean they are. Those who's bikes run leanest will likely see the fan go on more often. Once we get the tuneboy happening i assume they will go on far less, as a properly tuned bike will run considerably cooler.

That's good to hear! I was getting worried as mine has started to come on more often than when I first collected the bike... But that was towards the end of the year and becoming cooler.
Now we have raising temperatures, BB-Kit and I'm pushing a little harder than last year!

Mine comes on most times I ride - cold or warm weather and I doubt I push my bike nearly as hard as others on this board. I notice it at stop lights and when I pull into my garage.

I do take a lot of long rides, however. I'm not sure if the fan ever comes on during a short trip.
